In the Russian Empire of 1919, idealistic young Osip Zadunaisky joins the unscrupulous con artist Ibrahim Bender in search of a diamond-encrusted royal scepter hidden in town. Promised a share of the proceeds, Osip enters a dangerous partnership while they evade the White Guard and local mafia, and learns Bender’s methods of deception, intimidation, and force.
