Thomas Brasch grows up in the young GDR after moving there with his family from England, but his ambitions as a writer place him at odds with his father and the state. His play is banned, he loses his place at film school, and a failed 1968 protest leads to prison after his father reports him to the Stasi. After his release, Brasch continues writing about love, revolt, and death in a country that rejects him.
