In a fading Japanese countryside village, the impending closure of the local school weighs on its students. Akira, a shy boy who has recently arrived from Tokyo with his father after an acrimonious divorce, retreats into drawing. He eventually agrees to join a mural project intended to mark the institution’s final days.
