After her father leaves her in rural Japan, precocious tween Karin lives at a temple with her grandfather and meets Anzu, a giant ghost cat assigned to watch over her. Distrustful of the notorious layabout, Karin interferes with his work for local townspeople while befriending forest spirits. When Anzu makes a bargain with the devil to win her over, Karin becomes entangled in the resulting chaos.
