After nineteen years of hard labor and suffering, Jean Valjean leaves prison angry, distrustful, and repeatedly rejected in a Provence village. Bishop Bienvenu offers him shelter alongside his sister and servant, but Valjean steals the bishop’s silverware. When police bring him back, the bishop forgives him and gives him the candlesticks, opening the way toward a different life.
