In the early 1960s, five-year-old Malika lives in a slum outside Paris with her Algerian immigrant family. After an accident leaves her facing years of hospital treatment and separation from home, Catholic nurses and nuns introduce her to music through singing at mass. She pursues that gift while confronting racism in French society and prejudice within her own community, moving toward the future in which she will be known as the diva of the ghetto.
