Commissioner Maigret and Lieutenant Janvier investigate the bullet-riddled death of a former ambassador, discovered by his longtime housekeeper. In the victim’s apartment, they find letters documenting a decades-long love correspondence with a princess whose husband has recently died. As Maigret questions both families and confronts the housekeeper’s silence, the case steadily unsettles his assumptions.
