After his infant niece dies and his brother-in-law is arrested as the culprit, Angelo Madsen Minax returns to his rural Michigan hometown. Using essay film, first-person cinéma vérité, staged actions, and decades of home movies, he encounters a community shaped by opioid addiction, economic depression, and religious fervor. Filmmaking becomes a means of rebuilding family bonds and reimagining justice while engaging with incarceration, addiction, trans embodiment, and ruralness.
