Moti Khan, a musically gifted boy from the lower-caste Manganiyar Muslims of the Thar Desert, must perform for ancestral patrons to survive, though he finds it humiliating. His father Sattar urges him to study and build a career away from music. Moti, however, dreams of becoming a respected singer, so he leaves his village to explore his musical identity.
