In the late 1940s, Nelakondapalli village in the Nizam Princely State of Hyderabad lives under the oppressive rule of an aristocratic family led by a Dorasani. Mallamma, the village’s beloved child, endures continual humiliation while villagers find solace in her songs. Raised by Sambayya, an old man, she also forms a mysterious attachment to a basil tree considered holy throughout the village.
