Living with her family in a village beside Issyk-Kul, Jyldys is teased by classmates because she rarely speaks and retreats into her own world. She finds comfort with Temirkul, her father's former teacher, who believes the lake holds the souls of the dead. After his wife dies, Temirkul plans to place her body in the lake, while Jyldys's father rejects the idea and pledges his land for a proper funeral.
