Present-day college student Zhang Qing hopes to join Professor Ye’s postgraduate class, so he writes historical fiction to express his reading of ancient literature through a modern perspective. In that story, Zhang becomes Fan Xian, who spends his childhood in a remote seaside town in the Kingdom of Qing with guidance from a mentor and a blindfolded watchman. Later, Fan travels to the capital, faces repeated ordeals, and tries to live by justice and goodness.
