José Inocêncio strikes a pact with Jequitibá and rises to become the region's most successful cocoa farmer, a near-mythical figure who wins the heart of Maria Santa. Their union yields four sons, but Maria Santa dies giving birth to the youngest, João Pedro. Grief hardens into blame, and the boy grows up beneath his father's resentment.
