Dorothy, a lonely widow whose physical condition is declining while her mind stays sharp, lives by a quiet routine of medication, gardening, and crossword puzzles. That pattern changes when JJ, a 17-year-old boy, sends his football into her garden. His interruption develops into an unexpected friendship, bringing together two people from very different stages of life as they discover unexpected common ground.
