After his wife Irène’s death, artist Antoine loses his inspiration and slips into alcoholism, blaming himself for the loss. Hoping to reach her, he consults Suzanne, a penniless sideshow performer posing as a clairvoyant. Antoine’s dealer Armand, desperate to keep him from falling apart, pays Suzanne’s debts in exchange for sustaining the deception. Through improvised hypnosis sessions, she claims to channel Irène while Antoine remains caught in his search for contact.
