In 1900s India, Calcutta zamindar Devdas Mukherjee is unable to marry his lover, leaving him in pain. Seeking relief, he turns to alcohol and the company of a courtesan. Drinking and the courtesan’s presence come to define his days, while the woman he cannot marry remains at the center of his painful situation. Devdas continues to live with that unresolved love and the means he has chosen to alleviate it.
