Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India

In 1893, while India is under British occupation, Captain Russell imposes an unprecedented land tax on a small village. Bhuvan, a rebellious farmer, publicly challenges the levy and draws the villagers into the dispute. Russell proposes a cricket match as the test: although the sport is completely foreign to India, Bhuvan and his men must defeat the captain’s team to have the tax repealed. The villagers therefore face an unfamiliar contest with their financial burden tied to its outcome.
