Original title: 君たちはどう生きるか

During the Second World War, teenage Mahito leaves Tokyo for the quiet countryside, where he goes to live with Natsuko, his new stepmother. Natsuko’s resemblance to his dead mother complicates his adjustment to the unfamiliar home. A persistent gray heron then begins to perplex and torment him, calling him the “long-awaited one.” Mahito must contend with this unsettling presence as his new surroundings grow increasingly strange.
