On death row in a Southern prison, gentle giant John Coffey possesses a mysterious power to heal people's ailments. Head guard Paul Edgecomb encounters Coffey and recognizes the extraordinary nature of his gift. As Coffey remains condemned to die, Paul tries desperately to find a way to stave off the execution. The prison cell block becomes the setting for a supernatural conflict between Coffey's healing ability and the sentence awaiting him.
