Roman Cudakowski, known as Cudak, earns money playing wedding and city-party concerts during the occupation, when German access to venues creates opportunities. He brings gifted violinist Szymon Akerman out of the ghetto to perform, despite their earlier disagreements. As both men depend on the work, Cudak chooses to hide Szymon and his family in his home, putting his own life at risk.
