Beryl Gardenant, a middle-aged swordsman who runs a dojo in the backwaters, has settled into a quiet life. That routine is disrupted when Allucia, a former student who now commands the Royal Order of Knights, arrives. Beryl is drawn into city life, where he encounters old students, new friends, and formidable foes. Years of training have given him formidable sword skills, but the sudden changes are difficult to manage as others begin calling him the backwater swordmaster.
